We’ve started work on 72 gas-free affordable homes in Barnsley

We’ve started work on 72 new affordable homes in Barnsley, transforming a former care home site that has stood empty for years into a new community.

Our new Colliery Gate development in Monk Bretton is being built on the site of the former Belmont Care Home and will provide 72 affordable homes. It will include a mix of homes for social rent and shared ownership, giving more people the chance to access a safe, affordable place to call home.

Delivered in partnership with Wordsworth Properties, the scheme is bringing a long-vacant brownfield site back into use after Belmont Care Home stood empty for around eight years before being demolished in 2022.

We're also making sure the homes are built with the future in mind. The development will be completely gas-free, with air source heat pumps, solar panels and electric vehicle charging points helping to create more energy-efficient homes. Colliery Gate is also our fourth gas-free development to get underway in recent months, following new schemes in Bridlington, Holme on Spalding Moor and Amotherby.

Clare Harrigan, our Executive Director of Growth and Assets, said: “It's great to see work getting underway at Colliery Gate and a site that has been sitting empty for so long being brought back into use.

“At a time when the housing crisis continues to affect communities across the region, creating more genuinely affordable homes has never been more important. These homes will give local people more options through social rent and shared ownership, helping them find a home that works for both their needs and their budget.

“Having a safe, affordable home can make a huge difference. It gives people the security and stability to put down roots, support their families and look ahead with confidence.”

The development will include a mix of one, two, three and four-bedroom homes, helping to meet a range of local housing needs. It's also our first development with Wordsworth Properties.

Jonathan Bailey, Managing Director at Wordsworth Properties, said: “We're delighted to be working with Yorkshire Housing on the delivery of 72 new affordable homes. This is an important project for Wordsworth Properties and a great opportunity to create high-quality, energy-efficient homes that will make a real difference to local families and the community.

“We're proud to be partnering with Yorkshire Housing and look forward to delivering a development we can all be proud of.”

Colliery Gate is expected to be completed in early 2029 and is the latest development supporting our ambition to build 8,000 new homes across Yorkshire.
