Harassment and hate crime

Harassment and hate crime often target someone because of who they are - their race, culture, gender, age, religion, sexuality, mental health, or a physical disability.

What should you do?

We understand you might feel too scared or threatened to speak to the people who’re causing the problem. Never put yourself in potential danger.

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 999. For non-emergencies, call 101.

Report it to us too - call 0345 366 4404 or use our online form. You should also report it to the police, because harassment and hate crime is a criminal offence.

What will we do?

We take reports of harassment and hate crime very seriously. We understand this can leave you feeling scared or anxious - we’ll do everything we can to keep you safe. Anything you share with us will be kept confidential.

We may also need the help of other agencies, such as the police or the council, when harassment or hate crime occurs. If that happens, we’ll let you know what we’re doing and who we’re speaking to about the problem. Sometimes other agencies have powers they can use, or we can work together to stop the problem.

There’s lots we can do, depending on how serious the problem is including:

  • Ask you to use the ASB app or keep a diary to record evidence
  • Issue verbal and written warnings
  • Arrange mediation or restorative justice
  • Fit extra security measures like CCTV, locks, and lights
  • Provide CCTV equipment for your home
  • Take legal action
